Oh Halifax, I love thee. Especially in the summer. I know we've had our differences over weather patterns and incidents of crime, but you win me back time and time again. To stroll through your hilly streets, taking in your sights and sounds, it reminds me of the reasons why I love you. Your friendly people, beautiful views, and eclectic culture keep me around.
I decided to get up bright and early this morning to take in the market, a favorite Saturday morning activity I've forgotten about lately. Though the air was a bit chilly (only around 15 degrees) and the sun was hiding, it was a beautiful morning. After a quick breakfast of waffles and cranberry juice, I hopped a bus downtown and wandered through the streets like a tourist (another favorite activity of mine). After meandering aimlessly though the market (coffee was of course first on my list - Java Blend is THE best coffee at the market. Check them out on Robie St. during the week - they roast their own coffee and everything!), I ended up at my favorite soap place - Earth Elementals. It's fantastic! I haven't found a bar I didn't like yet (and I've tried just about every kind of soap they make). I highly recommend trying their sample pack of soap ends - that way, you get to try a bunch of different types/scents for only $10.
On my way to the bus, I stopped off at Maps and More on Lower Water St. I'd walked by it countless times, but had never ventured in (one major benefit to being alone while shopping/adventuring- you can do whatever you want, whenever you want. It's lovely). I've been wanting a world map for the wall for a while now, so I decided today was the day. I plan on redecorating the office/spare room this month anyway, so it worked out nicely. The salesperson was incredibly helpful (she helped me find a relatively cheap laminated world map for the wall). Though I probably should not be spending $35 on maps I do not need (I'll be out of work within the next two weeks), I'm thrilled! I've always been terrible at geography, and love to learn - it's a multipurpose purchase!
Though I love living outside of the downtown core for many reasons, I forget how much I love downtown Halifax until I'm there. As I left Maps and More, I saw some kids spray-painting a wall outside of the old Brewery Market. My heart swelled; not only were these kids incredibly talented, but they were using their talents to enhance and beautify the space around them.
There's a reason that I love this town.
