Video Games

I've never really understood video games. My sister has been a gamer for as long as I can remember, obsessed with everything from The Legend of Zelda to World of Warcraft. I, on the other hand, can barely make it through a round of Mario Kart. I still haven't been able to get through Super Mario Bros. - I bought a Wii this winter in the hopes that I could finally fulfill my seemingly life-long goal of finishing the game (well, a version of it - I don't have a NES to play the original on). Since then, I've used it for Netflix...and that's about it. I think I played Mario twice and got extremely frustrated when I couldn't get past the second level. Sometimes I'll get drunk on rum punch and flail around the living room to Just Dance. That's more my speed.

I guess I prefer something a bit more interactive, like a board game. Or a card game! Mind you, I'm not very good at those either, but I can usually muddle my way through a hand of 45s or a round of cribbage. Growing up, we were obsessed with 45s - I can still remember spending every morning, recess, and lunch huddled around a table with my fellow classmates at the tender age of 10 playing hand after hand of 45s. During my college years I had a brief foray into the world of poker, usually just a $5 buy-in at a friend's place. Because the college I attended was predominantly a trades college, the vast majority were manly men who liked their beer cold and their women hot (we obviously had a lot in common aside from the beer). Being the blue-eyed, blonde-haired gal I was, they assumed I didn't have a clue what I was doing and they could fleece me - and they did, at first. But I have a mean poker face and quickly turned the tables on them. Didn't win any money, but I gave them a good run for theirs.

So why the random post about something I know so little about? I've been obsessed with a song titled Video Games by Lana Del Rey lately. Like, OBSESSED. Have you heard it? It isn't the happiest song, but there's something about the simplicity of the chords and her voice that has this utterly haunting quality; the kind of voice you can't get out of your head for days. Take five minutes and give it a listen.
